"Hardwood" can refer to either the wood of certain tree species or the trees themselves. Domestic or common hardwoods include ash, beach, maple and cherry as well as oak which is probably the most well-known domestic hardwood. Contrast these with softwoods such as pine, birch and cypress.
According to Wikipedia, hardwood is a term "used to describe wood from angiosperm trees (more strictly speaking non-monocot angiosperm trees)" and it is interesting to note that some hardwoods are actually softer than many softwoods, balsa for example.
